Memorial Day In Philly

ml09

It's one of those summer weekends where most of the city slickers slip away to country/ beach/ vacation homes. Out of the smog and traffic, lazy bathing suit clad loungers pity those left in the city. But hark! There's so many patriotic (and bizarre) things to do in Philly this weekend! Check out our suggestions after the jump. If these all fail, you can always just break into a hotel pool or something.

Saturday May 28:

Celebrate at the Betsy Ross House 239 Arch St. All day Head down to Old City to celebrate with fans of the creator of the American flag. Visitors can participate in "make–and–take crafts" all day long.  Sounds cool.  Like a comb sheath.

Patriotic Karaoke at the National Constitution Center 525 Arch St. 10 a.m to 3 p.m. Join fellow proud Americans in singing "patriotic karaoke." We're assuming this is kind of like Copa karaoke... but with less pelvic thrusting... and more innocent children. If you feel the need for a more educational look at Memorial Day, hang around the Constitution Center all weekend; programming will start on Saturday at 10 a.m. and continue until Monday.

Sunday May 29

Memorial Day Parade at the Laurel Hill Cemetary 3822 Ridge Ave. 12 p.m. Feel like a revolutionary and venture to the landmark where the first Memorial Day was celebrated in Philadelphia in 1868. Free tours of the historic cemetery are offered after the parade.

Monday May 30

Memorial Day Fun in Franklin Square 200 N. 6th St. 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. Franklin Square is offering face painting and rides around the park all weekend. But spend time here on Monday when most other businesses are closed for the holiday. The Lightening Bolt Express will be open!

Delaware River Tubing 2998 Daniel Bray Highway (Route 29), Frenchtown NJ 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. If you feel the need to beat the (hopeful) heat and the beach is just too far away, spend your free Monday tubing down the Delaware River. With the tubing center just an hour away, a leisurely day on the water seems like a gift from the veterans.  Skip the high weekend prices and go on Monday for $18.95 a rider.

If none of these suit your weekend–in–Philly needs check out Yelp's Top 10 guide.
