Fall Break, Without Breaking The Bank

philadelphia

It's here! It's finally here! By "it," we mean the sun. And the end of three-day stretches in Van Pelt finishing papers. And everybody's favorite awkwardly-lengthed vacation, of course! While some folks head home (snooze), a few lucky ducks jet off to Europe to visit their friends abroad (jealous) and others hop over to New York/D.C./anywhere but here (meh), UTB has the scoop for all y'all staying in Philly this long weekend. We get that not everybody has a couple million dollars on hand to blow, so we've got ways to make the most of your break on a dime (or 200).

First Friday Party When: Friday, 7-9p.m. Where:  Race Street Pier, Race Street and Delaware Avenue Cost: Free

There ain't no party like a First Friday Party 'cause a First Friday Party has performances by DJ Jack Tripper, the Night Bright Band, and "strolling light performers"  to pump up the Old City gallery crawl. Note: despite the description, this is NOT a rave.

Giant South Philly Flea Market When: Saturday, 9a.m.-5p.m. Where:  Jefferson Square Park (S. 4th St. and Washington Ave.) Cost: However much you spend on vintage coloring books and used Easy Bake Ovens

Because who doesn't love wolf sweaters?

James Blake At The Troc When: Saturday, 9p.m. Where:  The Trocadero, 1003 Arch Street Cost: $21 in advance, $23 at the door

Because you aren't hardcore enough to get your dub on at the Skrillex show. Or because the Skrillex show is sold out (womp womp...wobble). Either way, it's okay! Breeze through two Wharton Behavioral Labs and you can vibe to some chilled-out womps for free, kind of.

Philadelphia Orchestra Free Neighborhood Concert When: Sunday, 6:30p.m. Where:  Great Plaza at Penn's Landing Cost: Ain't one!

It's free. It's outdoors. It's the Philadelphia Orchestra! Did you know the Philadelphia Orchestra is one of the country's Big Five symphonies? That means they rock. Can a symphony rock? Yes.

Philly Sketchfest   When: Daily shows beginning Monday, 8p.m. Where:  Philadelphia Shakespeare Theatre, 2111 Sansom St. Cost: $10

Jokes! Laughter! A few uncomfortable silences, maybe! PSF is celebrating the "wealth of talent in the local sketch comedy scene." We're mostly interested in the Don Montrey’s Dirtiest Sketch in Philadelphia contest, where "groups will compete for audience votes by pushing limits to the max with the dirtiest, raunchiest, foulest sketches audiences will ever see." Competitors, meet your match.
