Pro/Con/Pro: Celebrating Earth Day

As we're almost positive a small minority of you must know, Earth Day is upon us. Yes, you heard us correctly: and you better be RECYCLING your red solo cups because today, April 22nd is that one day of the year you are supposed to care about our planet. But how far should you go? UTB has weighed the pros and cons of celebrating Earth Day-- see for yourself:

Earth Day: General Knowledge

  • Pro: Caring about the environment is good! Global warming is bad!
  • Con: It seems kinda self-centered of us… do the other planets get any love? We want a Uranus day.
  • Pro: US Senator Gaylord Nelson founded Earth Day. That's a pretty cool name.

Environmentally Friendly Activities

  • Pro: Using uberpool to get to your multiple downtowns is a chance to drunkenly make new friends that you'll ignore in the harsh light of day
  • Con: Recycling is pretty confusing-- napkins aren't even compostable, okay?
  • Pro: Get rid of some lingering anger! Earth Day is one of the only times when leaving your roommates notes about turning off the bathroom light  won't come off as passive aggressive

Taking Advantage of What Earth Day Has To Offer

  • Pro: A perfect opportunity to insta photos of you being environmentally conscious... Doing good for the world always brings in mad likes. Consider planting a flower while holding a Fair Trade, locally-sourced, Non-GMO, Organic chocolate bar for maximum believability.
  • Con: It's only a day? People act like they care about the environment for 24 hours and then go right back to throwing their venti Starbucks iced mochas straight into the landfill.
  • Pro: Think of the opportunities for resume-building activities! Working with eco-friendly nonprofits looks great when applying for internships.

Holiday Festivities

  • Pro: Fling was last week but there's nothing special about the last weekend before finals, so people might be scrambling to find an excuse to turn up. That's when Earth Day comes in!!
  • Con: But do you really want to go an Earth Day themed mixer....? Think of all the frightening possibilities: e.g. "Turn Down (the Lights) for What?"
  • Pro: 4/20 was just two days ago but you can never come up with enough reasons to smoke pot-- it literally comes from the Mother Nature. Biodegradable fun? We're totally in!

Well, there you have it. Our suggestion? Take the time out of your day to do something nice: maybe avoid that extra flyerer on Locust to eliminate paper waste! But definitely think about a Uranus day.
