Street Gets Spooky
Happy Thursday, folks. Many of you are probably looking forward to this upcoming weekend of debauchery; some of you have decided that Halloween began on Tuesday. Either way, Street is here to get you through the weekend.

SPEC Film is hosting a free screening of The Fourth Kind Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at The Bridge and it just so happens that they hooked us up with six pairs of VIP tickets. What comes along with that VIP treatment? No waiting on line! Roped off seats! A free poster!
Street is back. Did you miss us? We missed you! Pick us up. Right now. Give us a hug. We promise we'll hug you back. Want a digital hug? Check out the PDF here.
Our pals in Mask and Wig are wearing Dora the Explorer balloons today to promote their fall show, Conquistadora the Explorer, which opens tonight at the Iron Gate Theater. Man, those guys are so zany! Also, be sure to check out what our other pals at the DP had to say about the preparations for the show here.
Street photo editor Thomas Jansen sent in this photo of a powerless Harnwell College House (Rodin's on the left, Harnwell's on the right). We hear the power is out in Harnwell, ZBT and a few other surrounding buildings.
We have lots of thoughts regarding Student Union 34, in particular the Kelly Writers House-produced Penn page. For now, we will just leave you with this:
Today's public service announcement: drop period ends tonight at midnight. Tonight is also your last chance to change your grade type to pass/fail.
After weeks of gabbing about Fall Fest, it went down this weekend and was a total hit. Several day-drunk attendees told us that it was "just like Spring Fling," and a particularly stumbly one added "but in like, the fall." Rumor has it that the Super Mash Bros paused to read a party invitation handed to them on stage by some girl who we definitely don't know and who definitely didn't announce any Battle of the Bands winners and who probably has absolutely nothing to do with 34th Street.
Tipster Emily Kaplan sent in this photo of some kids playing leap frog outside of Smoke's. Sure beats beer pong!
Last week we got wind that Magic Johnson would be making a trip to Penn, and it looks like today was the lucky day! We hear he was checking out Penn with his son, and that he made some remarks about supporting Arlen Specter. DP/Street photographer Maya Spitzer hooked us up with some pics. See more after the jump.
That's right, folks. The DP has a new online home at thedp.com. Because let's be real, dailypennsylvanian.com was just too damn long. But the changes don't end at the name. No no, the site has undergone an extensive redesign, which we think looks pretty nifty. Check out our side-by-side comparison after the jump.
Remember that imaginary Senior Society Debutante Ball we told you about last spring? You know, that one where self-important juniors are recognized as self-important almost-seniors by self-important almost-graduates? Well, the societies have initiated their fall classes, and we've compiled the lists for you after the jump.
Everyone is all, "OMFG, vampires!" and we're sick of it. What about those other creatures that go bump in the night? They deserve some undead lovin', too! Enter: this week's Street cover story about the Philly Zombie Prom. Seriously awesome stuff. We also discovered our new favorite West Philly market, found out the scoop on Fall Fest's Battle of the Bands and indecently exposed Oktoberfest. And to top it off, we entered into an online relationship, got back to our journalistic roots and rounded up this week's gossip.
As you probably know by now, Street comes out on Thursdays. But every so often, we come out with a bonus issue, like last spring's Dining Guide (note to foodies: our fall Dining Guide drops next month).
Looks like a massive game of capture the flag is going down on campus tonight — we got a pic of the players being briefed on the rules. This vaguely reminds us of last year's epic snowball fight. Send us your photos here (and let us know who in fact captures said flag!).
Word is Magic Johnson, five time NBA Champion (yeah, five times! who knew?), will be here at Penn today taking a look at the school with his son. If this is true, remember this: celebrities are people too, guys! Sometimes they need to look at schools without people interrupting to tell them how most of their tuition was paid thanks to money earned on a bet their father made on the '88 Finals or how much they loved those Magic Hour tapes they found in their basement, so we recommend that you just let the man take this tour in peace. In conclusion, our official advice: let him be, maaaybe take a picture from afar, send it in, and make us proud, Penn.
Thursday = Street day = best day. Duh. What do we have in store for you this week? A musical stereotype chart that rivals the Japster chart of years past, a review of Jose Garces's newest culinary delight, Penn iPhone apps and a look at some swanky student digs. The Roundup atones for its sins and it's all Greek to our Egos of the Week. Plus, we look into the origins of the Rotunda on Walnut.
If you want to write for us, tonight is a big night! At 5:30, we will be holding our first Under The Button Writers' Meeting at 4015 Walnut. We'll go over how we plan on assigning posts, guidelines for writing, and lots of other fun stuff. There might even be some candy. Candy, guys.
A couple of weeks ago we told you about how to enter the Fall Festival Battle of the Bands, and now our friends over at SPEC have clued us in to who made the cut. On Saturday, Oct. 10, each of the seven bands will play a 20-minute set. The battle is going down from 2:30-6, and will take place on College Green.
Tipster Preston Hershorn sent in this picture of a chicken handing out fliers on Locust Walk. Apparently said chicken is shilling for PETA. Well, that's effective.
