Doughn't You Love Pretzels?

(10/21/09 7:57pm)

Some people bike for affordable housing. Some people bike for mad street cred in France. And some people bike for getting places, we guess. But forget all of them; there are those who bike for a way worthier cause, and that cause is pretzels. Soft innards, a crispy shell, and salt the size of those crystals they throw on the street when it snows? Pretzels are so totally twisted. Literally!

Green On The Not Green

(09/16/09 8:40pm)

Before noon, the crunchier among us (not to mention the hungrier and the broker-and-seeking-free-food) convened for the greenest thing Penn’s seen since that girl spilled her Gia salad all over the sidewalk on Spruce. Today marked the launch of the Climate Action Plan, Penn’s latest and greatest effort in sustainability, and we were there to witness it! Sadly, Mother Nature did not quite return the favor to Penn. Due to inclement misting, the launch festival was relocated from College Green (clever!) to Bodek Lounge (not so clever).

Word on the Summer Street

(07/16/09 9:35pm)

Missing the Bard, rolling your "r"'s or participating in three-hour lectures on the cultural significance of 13 Going on 30? We at Summer Street have figured out ways for you to indulge your inner-academic if you've been missing your major this summer. And after healthy doses of UTB controversy since February, Street has finally taken on the Blockley to see if it can truly pour it on. We've also got mini-reviews for yous with shorter attention spans: check out our digest of the latest in music and foreign films.  Pick up (or download) your copy of the SP today for these arts and culture gems, live in color! You might be sick of these Summer Street posts, but trust us, it's worth it for this week's StreetTakesYouOut. You know you'll never tire of ice cream, pizza or hip hop dancers bustin' moves.

It's Thursday; Do You Know Where Your Street Is?

(07/09/09 10:00am)

After a two-week hiatus, Summer Street is back, and better than ever! We bring you the best ways to get your sip on downtown, featuring our summer faves for Wednesday evening drinks. If you've had a hankering for the sweet comedic stylings of Ali G, you're in luck, there's a new SBCohen caricature in town (although he may not coin the catchy punchlines of his Kazakh counterpart). And in the manner of this year's back-to-back Fling and Hey Day, your day drinking this weekend is justified for the second week in a row: Bastille Day comes to Philly starting this evening. Last but not least, see what our favorite intern, Rachel Stern-Stein, has been up to since we left her in last month's lowbrow. Pick up your copy, lovers, we're taking you out again... in a kayak! You effing love it.

Just Street It

(06/25/09 2:44pm)

Bored with summer already and want someone to take you out? Lacking some indie film enlightenment in your life? Trying to figure out what to do in Philly for the Fourth? Yearning to find out whether or not Larry David can pull off a character other than himself? Pick up your very own copy of the Summer Pennsylvanian and flip to page six (no, not that one) for the panacea to these burning desires. It's your last Street fix (for the next two weeks), so hop to it! Happy Streeting!

Street Is Poppin'

(06/18/09 7:49pm)

Although the weather may not quite agree, we are well into June. And that means that Summer Street is committed to making June '09 your best month EVER (until July, that is). Pick up this week's issue at DP newsstands, or peep the pdf to pack your arts and culture calendar this week. Whether it be ending your summer search for the perfect burger, filling your Saturday with live music in Northern Liberties, or staying on campus for a last peek at student art, don't let the rain stop you from hitting the street for summer awesomeness. Grab those umbrellas; we're taking you out.

Street's Still Taking You Out

(06/11/09 4:55pm)

As always, Thursday is Street day! Pick up your very own copy of the Summer Pennsylvanian to check out this week's issue, brought to you by the letter F. Farmers' Markets are highlighted in our feature this issue, just in case your advertising internship is leaving you longing for a different kind of market research. Film covers the newly-debuted Dave Eggers flick, though the movie itself may not sweep you away as promised in its title. Guides this week highlights another favorite f-word in its coverage of Tuesday's Erotic Lit Salon. And our funniest section makes its Summer Street debut this week... that's right, kids, Lowbrow is back! Don't forget to check out the print edition for the full Street effect.

Street, Summer Style

(06/04/09 6:32pm)

School may be out (for most), but Thursday is still the best day ever, thanks to Street! If you're still Penn local, pick up today's issue of the Summer Pennsylvanian for your weekly Street fix on pages 4 and 5. In some exotic locale (Manhattan, abroad, your parent's house)? Hit up the PDF for a guide to summer stylin', a taste of down-home cookin' in Old City, and an overview of your new favorite NoLibs hang. And remember - the issue is on stands all week.

The Inside Scoop On Capogiro

(06/01/09 4:43am)

While private opening parties are typically reserved for the trendy and influential (read: friends of the owner), Capogiro's West Philly extension put Summer Street editor (and bona fide Italophile) Annette D'Onofrio on the list for its opening soiree (thanks, press pass!). From the second we name-dropped our way into the party, the champagne was a-flowin' and the staffers were a-scoopin'. The gelateria bar offered, firstly and foremostly, a number of gelati in standard (hazelnut, chocolate) and unique (champagne mango, pineapple mint) flavors. Each flavor is conveniently labeled, too: local, seasonal, contains nuts, a "last chance" flavor. Any indecisive (or cheap) patron can sample all kinds, thanks to those tiny shovel-like sample spoons. After doing so, we came to a general consensus: amazing on all counts. While pretty pricey (the "piccola," or 2-scoop small size, was $4 and change), the product itself does not disappoint. The gelato is surprisingly light, despite its richness in flavor. Also present were samples of their blended gelato treats, like the mango frappe, a summery and delicious take on the milkshake. The staff also continually filled flutes with a signature drink, the scorpion, a concoction that mixes gelato with prosecco. While the white foamy appearance was weirdly latte-esque, the drink has all the appeal of a high-class, Italian, alcoholic root beer float. Capogiro also houses a full bar, coffee and sandwich menu, including panini and tramezzini (cold sandwiches), both of which were, true to form, pretty expensive ($7-$8 per sandwich). NB: The menu itself is randomly bilingual (sandwiches with "tacchino," not "turkey," but "artichokes," not "carcioffi"), so you might want to bring your friend in ITAL140. All in all, we recommend hitting up Capogiro for what it does best: gelato. The delicious ice cream alternative and the trendy decor and ambience (deep blue walls, brightly colored booths, strange metal light fixtures) make it the newest groovy place to eat and loiter. Now all they need is wireless. Chin chin!

Chocolate Croissants And Medium Iced Tweets?

(04/07/09 5:00pm)

Ah, Williams Café. Its plethora of offerings and convenience of location make the 15-person pre-class lines oh-so-worth the wait.  With its recently revamped furniture and the addition of 2% milk, Williams has stepped it up this semester, even earning itself a coveted spot among Street's Best of Penn. But has the fame gone to its caffeinated little head? Not only is its B.O.P. nod prominently posted on its bagel case -- twice -- but now the Café is followable on Twitter (where it boasted its Street cred yet again). Yes, Williams is now among the likes of Heidi Montag, Under the Button and, of course, tweeters like you. And you thought you'd never be able to get instant updates when the blueberry muffins run out.
