We found this flyer outside of Houston Hall's creperie. We're just wondering what's really going on here. Could it be: A shoutout to the film noir classic? A longing to be on a boat (with his flippy floppies)? Or is Mordecai really missing his predatory bird? Also, we're not sure exactly how amateur that sketch is...
Today's commencement of Food Week isn't the only food news to hit the stands. Foobooz reminded us that today also marks the first day that the new Philadelphia Calorie Law goes into effect. Apparently, any restaurant with more than 15 chains is now required to put calorie labels on their menus. Indeed, a victory for the health-conscious. But, for a city renowned for its cheesesteaks and who's mascot looks like this, critics are skeptical of the law's effectiveness.
It's only been three weeks, but Penn's got you down. The post-break excitement has neatly dwindled to a faint breath of tedium. Not even Blarney can make you feel whole again. But not to fear, Street is here! This week, we bring you two of the most hotly contested debate of the 21st Century: GaGa, yea or nay? Avatar: nay or yay? For those more into dipsomania than debate, check out our guide to making your own Limoncello. We can smell the zest from here. Speaking of zest, check out our feature on South Street Sounds, for a taste of the freshest sound around.
The New York Times reported the release of a new study undertaken by Wharton professors, Betsey Stevenson and Adam Isen, that challenges the conventional wisdom regarding college-educated women and marriage. While most of us probably aren't thinking about tying the knot right now, the study reveals some promising findings for the females of Penn. Not only are college-educated women less likely to be divorced at age 40, but they are apparently happier too!
In another Penn for Haiti effort, both the men's and women's basketball teams are hosting Hoops for Haiti tonight at the Palestra. Initiated by stud-turned-coach Jermone Allen in the wake of the tragedy, the Hoops for Haiti drive is encouraging fans to bring old shoes to tonight's game against St. Joseph's. Not only is it Penn's last chance to put an end to its 12-game Big 5 losing streak, but it's also for a great cause.
Between dealing with the Menge Crisis of '09 and continuing the battle against the Swine, Student Health managed to add acupuncture and massage therapy to its repertoire. While we're a bit uneasy about getting poked by needles, we figured Student Health is probably the best (read: most sterile) place to do it.
Food cart regulars may have noticed two of our favorite street-side establishments (KoJa, as pictured below, and Rami's) got serious makeovers sometime over winter break.
Last month, we got excited about Restaurant Week, and yesterday, while we were busy celebrating B-Frank's B-Day, the foodies of Philly celebrated the first day of two weeks of foodie fun. Although reservations have been filling up fast, you've still got time!
After being endowed with the UTB's Spicy Curry Award, I felt it my duty to inform Penn about the goings-on of the South Asian Community.
