Given the relative scarcity of quality weekend brunch options in the hood (spare us from the attitude at Rx and the pretentious molecular gastrobullshit at Marigold), we're quite excited by this most recent development. Starting next weekend, Distrito will begin serving a weekend brunch from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

As per a DP online update, Jon M. Huntsman Jr. is booked as the 2010 Commencement speaker. Aside from being the namesake for Wharton HQ, Huntsman used to be the Governor of Utah and now serves as the U.S. Ambassador to China.

Phew, well that's done with. Kid Cudi will be performing as an opener at Spring Fling. Here's SPEC's video. As for the Kid Rock prank, well done (once again), UTV13.

We've just received a rush of photos to kickstart the great Fling performer hunt, so here they are. The first is an "I" outside Skulls, sent in by Matthew Sternberg. After the jump, two "D's," a "C," a "K," and "I" and a "U."

Okay, so we were just getting geared up to start this whole alphabet soup hunt, when we received this. Tipsters tell us the Penn TV station, UTV13, aired this vaguely official-looking "Kid Rock IS Coming, Fling 2010" advertisement last night, with a SPEC watermark and all. Our SPEC friends say it's not legit, (a UTV13 prank?) but we're not sure. Perhaps there's some SPEC/UTV13 rivalry we don't know about? That could definitely be juicy. Anyway, we'll keep you updated.

If you haven't heard yet, SPEC wants to send you on a wild goose chase of sorts to announce the first Spring Fling performer. So grab your camera phones and make it to that early morning class.

Need that final retribution against Drexel? Yeah, neither do we, but we wouldn't mind beating them in Saturday's Relay for Life sponsored Battle of the Bands. The event, which is going down Saturday night at the Blockley Pourhouse (38th and Chestnut) at 8 p.m., features Penn bands "Sex Panther" Blake Feldman, Gabe Donnay, Greg Barber, Adam Savitt and Myles Karp) and SAM presents Admiral Goldberg & the Wayefaring Seamen (Zac Byer, Drew Evans, Adam Glick, Jonathan Goldberg, Mike Slivjak and Steve Waye). Penn emcee Ryan Levan will be running the show, while Justin Biggs, Aileen Connell and Jeff Weinstein will play guest bartender for the evening.

The University issued its first text message/email alert of the semester this morning. The alert stated, "A student was assaulted at 3600 Sansom St. by an unknown male. Penn & Phila Police are canvassing the area for the suspect."According to the DP and the Division of Public Safety website, the attack occured at 8:58 a.m. and was unprovoked. We received our text messages and emails just a few minutes before 10 a.m.

Friends, we've got some bad news if you wanted to go grocery shopping tonight: FRESH GROCER IS CLOSED FOR THE NEXT 24 HOURS.

This is a first, we think. Tipster Isabel Friedman sends us a photo of a car proceeding down Locust Walk last night. We have no idea what it was doing there, or if this is allowed.

Allow us to delve into politics beyond the Penn bubble for a moment, as this one may affect you.

Check it out, red carpet right in the hood! Our pals over at the Street film section want to hook you and a guest up with free passes to an advanced screening of Shutter Island at the Bridge on Thursday evening.

Remember when the football team won the Ivy League title? Though the basketball season may now capture our hearts and minds (and our sympathy), now there's bling to remind us of the football victory. We bumped into some quarterback friends who showed us their new diamond-studded championship rings.

We tune in occassionally to the Penn TV network (Channel 13, baby!) to see what our telecasting pals are up to. Check out their cheeky Valentine's shout out special. It's decidedly a bit tamer than Street's version of shout outs, but we appreciate the foreign exchange student, the guy who asks A-Gut on a date, and "all the single ladies from 1812," whoever you may be.

“First I thought it was a fire hazard, and then I remembered it was made of snow, so, like, snow counteracts fire.”
(02/11/10 6:48pm)
What could be better than free snacks, hot chocolate, a second snow day and a little Amy G.? Honestly, we're stumped.

Official sources confirm the University will be closed tomorrow, Thursday, February 11. And now, go booze it up!

In yet another major change to the CVS in the Radian (cost cutting?), the store now has self-checkout stations. You can still have a real live human being ring you up, but note that the counter has now moved to the right.

We wrote last week with excitement about the rumored underground Pho King "restaurant" that opened yesterday. First in line tipster Sara Fleischman tells us Pho King is indeed legit, and will be operating Speakeasy-style every Monday in Rodin at 11 p.m. Though last night's offering included only beef, it seems chicken may be available in the future. Fortunately, she snapped some Pho-tos to whet your appetite.
