Redcap's Corner Has Closed

(01/19/12 6:13pm)

...for now! We'll now take a pause for any remaining Yu-Gi-Oh! fans on campus (Do you exist?) to catch their collective breath. Redcap's will be permanently closing its 4040 Locust location and moving to a new place at 3617 Lancaster, which will open on February 1st. In the meantime, check out the neato website for the store, which features a cartoony gaping maw and a scrolling ticker of market prices of Magic: The Gathering cards. The Geist of Saint Traft is up 0.38%! YES.

Wanna Get A Discounted Tycho and Beacon Ticket?– Yeah, we do too! Enter the promo code "justdive" here before 12 a.m. on Friday to get a dollar off the (already cheap) ticket. $4, man? SPEC Jazz and Grooves 4evr.

Trynna Meet Will Shortz?

(01/18/12 2:06pm)

Yes, that Will Shortz, the famous crossword puzzle editor for the New York Times. Shortz will be visiting Penn on Tuesday, the 24th, from 5:30 to 7 in Irvine as part of Penn's Year of Games. If you're a crossword puzzle fanatic, fill out the above puzzle featured in today's DP (click to enlarge or check out the print version) and send us the answers before midnight. If you're one of the first five with all the correct responses, you'll get to meet Shortz at a reception and then get front row tickets for the talk. To the puzzles!

He's Hip, He's Cool, He's 306

(01/17/12 5:13pm)

Have you guys heard of Benjamin Franklin? He's some 18th cenutry "polymath genius" who "founded our University" or whatever, and he turned 306 (or 307, depending on whether you follow the Julian or Gregorian calendar) today. Yeah, we don't really get him either, but he's all over campus! In fact, the University Curator, who exists, notes that there are over 50 works of Dear Old Benn in University City. The first one erected, which stands on 33rd Street, depicts a 17-year old Ben who looks like a 40-year old. And that real crowd-pleaser near the Compass has served as the community urinal since 1987, which is actually not old at all.

No, No, Penn Popo

(01/17/12 3:12pm)

If you look really hard at the 224,675 pixels above this text and use the power of your ~imagination~, you can just barely make out a police car speeding along on important police business. Did we mention that it's driving east along Irving? So...that car is driving the wrong way on a one-way street. Which is illegal. "Oh, the irony," says Captain Obvious.

(01/17/12 1:12pm)

DPS Sends Out Two Emergency Texts, Everything OK– The Division of Public Safety sent out a text/email combo to all Penn students announcing that a assault had been reported at 38th and Woodland at 6:31, but an update that came shortly after 8 stated that it had been a false alarm. Whew!

Obama Curries Favor With Masala

(01/17/12 1:12am)

It's no secret that Penn loves Masala, and now the POTUS is trying to get in on some of the action too. Entertainment Weekly has published a leaked list of Obama's hopeful celebrity endorsements for his upcoming campaign and Penn Masala is among them. Yup, sandwiched between Kal Penn and Chris Pine, Penn Masala is on Obama's Nice List this year. Maybe that's why Joe Biden was here earlier.

(01/16/12 5:18pm)

Amy Gutmann Is Definitely Probably Having A Tea Party With Joe Biden– We're hearing unconfirmed reports of Biden sightings outside the Prez's house, and the popo and Secret Service are all over 38th and Walnut. Got the scoop? Let us know.

Wine And Spirits On 41st Has Closed For Good

(01/15/12 8:56pm)

It's not really all that surprising, considering that the place looked like it was straight out of Cold War-era Russia, but COME ON! It was so convenient! In the past year, the gods/goddesses have taken away the Pronto and the liquor store. What's next? Our lives, liberties and collective pursuits of happiness? Spring Fling? In the meantime, you'll have to trek out to 19th and Chestnut or 24th and South to get your booze fix.

Commentary Presented With Commentary

(01/15/12 6:20pm)

Yo commenters, do you realize how rad you are? You make us laugh, correct information in our posts and call us out for being unrepentant twats. We want to show you our thanks, so give a warm welcome back to that ol' friend that's been a-hiding for the past year: Commentary Presented With Commentary. Now, let's take a trip around The Internet to see the best (and most bizarre) of our comments in the past week.

@UndergroundRush Is Penn's Latest Stupid Twitter

(01/12/12 3:23pm)

Sorority rush at Penn is an imperfect system that (at its worst) encourages superficiality and oppresses women, faults which are applauded on the new fake Penn Twitter account, Penn Sorority Rush (@UndergroundRush). At this point, your inbox has probably been spammed with multiple emails from the person (people?) behind this attention-grubbing account that has spawned some of the least original Tweets we've seen for months.

(01/11/12 9:06pm)

Heads up, DP recruitment is almost here– Don't wanna be a columnist or artist for the Daily Pennsylvanian but still want to be involved with the paper? You're in luck! Stop by recruitment sessions on Monday and Tuesday for details. You could be a star!

Houston, We Have A Problem: CampusLink Moves Out

(01/11/12 7:53pm)

Remember that last remaining vestige of the early 2000s, the dusty old CampusLink corner in Houston Market? The one with Gateway computer ads and echoes of Napster? It's gone. Yup, covered in caution tape and filled with stacked chairs and tables. It's like a crime scene from "CSI," but filled with the memories of the dot-com bubble instead of bodies. What do you think should go in the space? Tell us in the comments.

Harvest Seasonal Grill Is The New Marathon

(01/11/12 3:11am)

Remember when Marathon mysteriously closed? ("Mysteriously" is a fancy way of saying they weren't bringing in money and their service sucked.) Good news: Harvest Seasonal Grill (& Wine Bar) will be opening in Marathon's spot at 40th and Walnut in June, as the DP reports. The restaurant serves seasonal, healthy (most dishes are under 500 calories), organic, local, sustainable, etc. etc. etc. food. Basically, the food comes from near Philly and is good for you. And the menu changes completely with the season! Which is rad.

...AND WE'RE BACK!

(01/10/12 10:20pm)

Welcome back to Penn, everyone! (Except for you, with the face. You know who you are.) UTB was on a bit of a break over the holiday season, but now we're back in full-posting force. We're helping you celebrate the last night of freedom before classes start with a bit o' Whitney, so break out your dance shoes and remember to keep checking back. Buttons up for the new semester!
