Sick! Last week, Penn dropped a much-anticipated announcement about the 2019 commencement address: the speaker will be the Beats by Dre Pill Plus.

This announcement was made amidst rumors that the speaker would be the Bose SoundLink Bluetooth Speaker II.

Mixed reviews from students and alumni sprung up on social media following the announcement. Much of the praise for the speaker involved its superior battery life.

“This Beats Pill has up to 12 hours of battery life to stay charged on the go. It also has an LED fuel gauge that lets you know how much battery is left,” one student raved in a Facebook comment.

Others were not quite as supportive.

“I brought this speaker into the shower with me — even though, yeah, I technically knew it wasn’t waterproof — and it caused a small explosion that resulted in my mild electrocution,” one parent tweeted. “This is definitely not a speaker fit for a commencement as prestigious as Penn’s. The university can do better,” he added.

The Beats by Dre Pill Plus is preceded by a long line of prestigious Penn commencement speakers including the Sonos Original Play1, the Wonderboom Portable Bluetooth speaker, the JBL Flip 4, a Google Home Mini, and Lin Manuel Miranda.
