Just moments ago, our very own Claire Sliney, a sophomore in the College of Arts and Sciences, won an Oscar. Her film Period. End of Sentence. follows a group of girls and women in a rural village outside New Delhi who fight back against India’s deeply rooted stigma surrounding menstruation. The film won an Academy Award for best documentary short subject.

It is so wonderful to be at a school like Penn where creative minds receive the recognition they deserve. It is also important to recognize other minds who could also win Oscars but are a bit too busy rn to fully do that. One of those people is me.

I also could win an Oscar for a documentary short, and it would also probably address something pretty important. I haven’t totally fleshed out the idea yet, but I feel like it would probably relate to global warming or the war in Syria.

I’ve actually thought a lot about documentary film making as a future career and also really could see myself at the Oscars one day like Claire was just now. My mom has said I’m a pretty creative person so I feel like if I had the time and I made a documentary it would probably also win an Oscar.

So, congrats to Claire on her special night, and also congrats to me because I feel like I could do that too at one point.
