City Tap House To Open Monday, May 10

(04/21/10 4:22pm)

After much speculation, the good folks at City Tap House have sent out official word that the indoor-outdoor pub, located on the second floor of the Radian, will be opening on Monday, May 10. Never mind that this date is nearly a year after it was first rumored to open its doors, their lengthy press release got us psyched for what's to come! The restaurant is said to feature an "island" bar with 60 taps, 120-seat dining room, open kitchen, and two outdoor terraces complete with five stone fire pits. There will also be two semi-private grottoes and a semi-private elevated lounge. Swanky!

The Hey Day Guide: Senior Edition

(04/20/10 4:13pm)

Once upon a time, in a far off land known as freshman year, we used to pour over our @sas inboxes like there was no tomorrow. Every Penn email we received was scrutinized down to the last detail. Then, around the same time we realized the UA wasn't for us and we weren't destined to be Slavic majors, our delete button started lookin' better and better. And now, four years later, we find ourselves getting emails saying "please confirm you are NOT ATTENDING graduation." Woops!

Don't Forget Your Carabiner!

(04/13/10 2:15pm)

We noticed this picture today when we logged on to Penn Portal. While we appreciate Penn's concern, we have to admit we're a little offended. We realize it's important to "fling safe" and all, but what do they think fling is? A hike up Kilimanjaro? And what's with the explanatory pictures - what are we, kindergardeners? Or worse, state schoolers? (But really, who measures with a solo cup?) In sum: check yo'self, before you wreck yo'self...and keep your paper doll chain buddies handy.

Ice Cream! You Scream!

(04/07/10 8:17pm)

Looking for a way to beat the heat (oh, and support art history?) The History of Art Department tea is today at 5 pm outside of Jaffe for students and faculty. Never been to a tea? Worried your top hat and white gloves are at the dry cleaners? Fear not. It's basically a fancy word for ice cream, cookies, fruit and mingling. And it's all FREE! Definitely a classy alternative to other campus food options. Options. Options. Have we made our point?

Junot Diaz On Campus Tonight

(03/29/10 6:21pm)

Remember when the English Department handed out copies of Junot Diaz's The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao for your Winter Break reading pleasure? Well apparently some people do, because they're bringing the award-winning author to campus tonight to speak at Claudia Cohen Hall (room A17, 5-9 pm). Diaz's literature has won many awards, including the National Book Critics Circle Award, the Dayton Literary Peace Price and the 2008 Pulitzer Prize (yeah, he's got it like that). The event is part of the Festival Latino 2010 Celebration. For more information, or for a copy of the Festival calendar, contact Migdalia Carrasquillo at lals@sas.upenn.edu.

Make Like The Red Sea And Split...To Your On-Campus Seder!

(03/29/10 2:03pm)

Notice the lack of activity around campus this weekend? Well kids, that's because Passover is upon us (come tonight at sundown, at least), as all of the Tri-State area Jews flock home to chow down on matzah and charoset (chop, chop, chop) at their family's seders. But for those of you who aren't from around these parts, there is still hope to get your seder on tonight and tomorrow. Tipsters (read: every single member of Hillel) have alerted us to this Passover video to spread word of student-led seders on campus. While we appreciate the sound effects, drunk Elijah, and pyramid reference (took us a while to get that one!), we're left with a few questions. How did fake Moses get to the Lost statue, and why is he picking its nose? Where did they find that baby in the laundry basket? Should we call child services? And why can't Moses hold his jungle juice?

Free Cone Day!

(03/23/10 4:12pm)

If you didn't already jump out of your seat at the site of the title, what are you waiting for?! Go! Right now!  (Yes, you!) Ben & Jerry's famous Free Cone Day is today at all participating locations (read: 40th and Locust). The line started early this morning, but sources tell us the good people at Ben & Jerry's usually keep it moving along fairly quickly. Already been? Let us know which flavors are being offered!

Finally Fulfilling Your Bagel Needs

(03/18/10 10:38pm)

For too long we've put up with Metro's hard-as-a-rock bagels and the unbearable lines (and even worse service) at Einstein. So we were excited when we passed this sign outside of Capogiro today. Still a little skeptical, we did some investigating - and it turns out the bagel fairies have finally decided to bless Penn's campus! Capogiro pulled out the big guns and is now offering New York's iconic H&H Bagels in various flavors. To top it off, they're serving them with a variety of spreads and toppings - including organic peanut butter and avacado. All we can say is thank you, Capogiro. THANK. YOU.

Tom Green On Campus

(03/04/10 8:49pm)

We heard a while back that Tom Green was coming to Penn to perform at SPEC and Mask and Wig's ComFest last night. You can read about the actual event in today's DP - but we're more interested in hearing about Tom's night after the show. Word is the comedian got his drink on with the Mask and Wig kids at Blarney post-show before heading to an off campus after-party where we hear Tom enjoyed some Green (see what we did there?). Later on he was spotted at Philly Diner where tipster Christian Lunoe snagged this pic. Yeah, we know it's not the best camera work around...would you buy that the blurriness symbolizes his state of mind? No? Send in more photos if you got 'em!

Side x Side

(03/04/10 4:29pm)

Allow me to introduce a new phenomenon (and UTB's newest feature!) my friends and I discovered a few months back: the side by side. Exactly as it sounds, the side by side showcases people or places that look strikingly similar. I started documenting side by sides on a tumblr blog, and realized soon in that a lot hit close to home. Here at Penn we like to think we're one of a kind, cream of the crop, unparalleled in every way. In reality? Lots of people and places 'round these parts look EXACTLY THE SAME. Now that you're privy to side by sides, send in any Penn-related lookalikes to UTB and we'll post 'em weekly. For our first UTB side by side, we give you a Penn Comm professor and a cross-dressing nanny. Enjoy!

PennCard Access Codes Change

(03/03/10 3:03pm)

Sometimes we forget the UA does things besides film cheesy videos and make amendments to a Constitution we never knew existed. Things like heighten security and privacy measures - all for you! The most recent enhancement? PennCard Access Codes, the number you punch in before you enter Penn residential buildings, will no longer be the last four digits of students' Social Security numbers. Rather, students will be assigned a random four-digit code and will have the ability to change it to something easier to remember. And if you're up to the challenge of decoding new PennPortal, existing PennCard Access Codes can now be changed under "Privacy Settings".

Date Auction At The Max!...Er, Marathon

(02/17/10 6:28pm)

Remember all the cool, semi-cheesy but semi-AWESOME things the gang from Saved By the Bell used to do during their days at Bayside? Well, Dzine2Show has taken  a page from Zack Morris's textbook and is hosting a charity date auction tonight at MarBar. All proceeds from the bidding (and $5 cover) will go to Relay for Life. The action kicks off at 9 pm, with drink specials until midnight (sorry folks, 21 to enter!). Unclear what happens if you win one of the auctionees, but we hope it involves flooding Mr. Belding's office or stealing Valley High's mascot. Got any other ideas? Leave 'em in the comments!

In Which We Continue To Love Snow Storms

(02/16/10 3:27pm)

We admit, when we woke up this morning and saw it snowing (again?!), we were less than thrilled. Sure, it's great for building really cool giant snowballs, but enough is enough already! That is, until we received an email from Vice Provost of Education Andrew N. Binns stating that the drop period has been extended due to last week's class cancellation. The deadline (formerly February 19) has now been pushed back to Wednesday, February 24 at 11:59 p.m. Binns notes that some courses have established drop deadlines earlier than the University's, so be sure to check with your profs before you bail on that midterm!
