The University Thinks You Will Be Mugged

(12/06/10 8:42pm)

Penn's Youtube channel (Why, yes! Penn does have a Youtube channel!) recently uploaded a pair of videos, and... Well, they're a little strange. One of them (above) is about shopper safety.  The smooth jazz intro and the first-person perspective clips are fun, yet the advice offered here is common sense. Snore. But hey, it seems like the university actually cares about us! That's kind of neat, especially considering what went down near the high-rises a few weeks ago. So, um, happy shopping? The second video (on self-defense classes) after the jump.

Chasing (Ch)Amy: (C)Happy Chanukah

(12/02/10 11:13pm)

The Presi-diva made a very special appearance this fine evening at Hillel. In addition to her traditional job of lighting the Gutmannorah, A-Gut hosted a Q&A session. As she said, "My favorite place to celebrate Chanukah is at Penn Hillel." And our favorite place to celebrate Chanukah is a few feet away from Ms. Gutmann. After all of these celebrations, hopefully Amy will come over to our house to put the star on the Christmas tree this year! Giggle!

UTB Lunch Week: Koja's Vegetarian Tofu Noodles

(12/02/10 6:07pm)

You have to wait in line in the cold for at least five minutes to get even the smallest order at Koja (38th and Walnut), but it's always worth it. While I could get just about anything on the menu and be happy, I was craving some vegetarian food today– and their tofu noodles don't disappoint. Many other Asian food trucks on campus serve grub that is 99% salt and 1% chicken-mushy vegetables-noodles-unidentifiable filler, but not Koja. The sauce isn't too salty and the noodles and tofu are very filling and flavorful. Overall, a wonderful lunch. But be warned if you order it spicy: it's painfully hot (in a good way). Go get Koja. Now.

OMGZ! Fire!

(12/01/10 11:27pm)

Somebody call 9–1–1! Shawty fire burning on the...36th Street! A little earlier this blustery evening, a car went a little crazy outside the Penn Bookstore and started spewing out flames and sparks. As you can see, firefighters quickly took care of the problem. We wonder, though – what caused the fire? Know what happened? Tell us in the comments!

ShutterButton: Memorie di una Geisha

(11/19/10 8:14pm)

Way back in 1934, the Italian Club decided to do things a little differently to promote the rich culture of Italy. A downtown at the Olive Garden? No. Some gelato at Capogiro? No. An enthusiastic performance of "Going Geisha for a Day"? YES. These gals traded in their togas for kimonos and their SpaghettiOs for sushi...in the name of Italian culture. We're not quite following their logic, but honestly, who wouldn't pay good money to see this?

Das Ist Bizarre

(11/13/10 10:17pm)

Around 4 p.m. today, a bunch of men dressed in German clothing were gathered outside Van Pelt to do traditional German things like dance, play accordions, and annoy students who are studying. But why were they there?  St. Martin's Day, spreading awareness of German culture, or late Oktoberfest celebrations? Who knows? In any case, we were glad to say "Auf Wiedersehen" to these wierdoschnitzels.

"Real World: Van Pelt," or "How I Spent An Entire Day In The Library"

(11/13/10 3:00pm)

Math midterm: November 17th at 11:00 in the morning. I can deal with that. Stat midterm: November 17th at 6:00 in the evening. Shit. Two midterms in my two hardest classes on the same day? Well, I guess there's only one solution to this problem: Lock myself in Van Pelt for 24 hours. Yes. Not 12 hours. Not even 17. One full day.

One Editor's Opinion: Don't Go To The Westboro Baptist Church's Protest

(11/12/10 3:00pm)

As you may have heard or read, members of the Westboro Baptist Church will be coming to the Annenberg Center this Saturday from 1:15 to 2 to protest the production of The Laramie Project. There will be yelling, name-calling, picketing, and all sorts of other nonsense on their part. And what will they accomplish? Nothing. But that doesn't mean we can't do something.

(11/10/10 6:08pm)

We Didn't Start The Fire – There is a fire-truck parked outside at the Lower Quad Gate entrance and another was spotted driving down Spruce, along with a van from the fire department. Is HUP on fire? Or did someone's toaster/microwave/electronic bedazzler almost burn down the Quad? Details to follow!

People Who Went To Penn: Mark Cronin

(11/04/10 2:00pm)

Mark Cronin may be the most important man you've never heard of. Not only is he an alum of our esteemed university (and Mask and Wig), he single-handedly (Okay, fine, he worked with 51 Minds Entertainment) created every television program that will define our generation for years to come. The Surreal Life. Strange Love. Flavor of Love. Charm School. I Love New York. Rock of Love.

Uh Oh, Allegro!

(11/01/10 2:00pm)

A tipster tells us that around 2 a.m. last night, one trick-or-treater who had been sipping some (spooky?) sizzurp got into a heated argument with an Allegro customer who was seated inside, and, well...this happened. Sources say that the popo and an ambulance arrived at the scene within minutes, and everything (except for the shattered window) soon returned to normal. "Normal" meaning that the drunk and hungry denizens of Allegro continued to sloppily eat their pizza.

Another Reason Not To Use Locust Walk

(10/29/10 3:14pm)

After a massive chalk campaign in the Quad, we had no choice but to check out Spotted on Locust. Besides vehemently disagreeing with its tagline, we think the website is just a really sketchy answer to every awkward student's cry for a Penn-centric Craigslist "Missed Connections" section. But at least it's not as obnoxiously whiny as that other Penn version of a popular site, PennFML. (P.S.: Hey, you – the hottie who's always in Provost library: I see you eyeing me above your psych book. I'll leave the seat next to me open next time.)

Vanessa Bayer Is Sassy2 And Single

(10/28/10 5:51pm)

Bloomers alum and SNL-comedienne Vanessa Bayer showed up on our Youtube feed this morning as the featured débutante of Comcast's "Dating on Demand" way back in 2007. While her username (sassy2) seems a bit misleading, it's Vanessa's comically awkward demeanor that's making us uncomfortable. From sitting home alone on the couch on Saturday nights to being part of the "Saturday Night Live" cast, let's hope this dashing gal has found her soulmate!

Lesson from Craigslist: Keep Doing What You Do, Penn Women

(10/25/10 8:27pm)

Sometimes, the people who post on Craigslist aren't looking to engage in some morally reprehensible sexual act. Sometimes, these people aren't even Penn professors looking for a date. Yep, the Craigslist-ers of the world can, in fact, make very touching posts. We're using "touching" in a completely non-physical way here.

Attention, All The Single Ladies

(10/25/10 6:04pm)

Are you an attractive young woman? Do you like wealthy college men? Does the prospect of having a "good time" get you in a tizzy? Well, look no further than that matchmaker of matchmakers, the DP Classifieds section. Yes, one brazen gentleman caller promises to delight you with his presence: ATTRACTIVE WOMAN Wanted: by a wealthy gentleman. I have a weakness for young and good looking females who enjoy a good time. Photos, phone number, and the best time to call. We're leaving the number out on this one, but it's up on the DP site if you're interested...and we know you're interested.
