Everyone Would Totally Sign Our Yearbook

(10/15/09 4:04pm)

Next week, members of the Class of 2010 are invited to pose for Senior Portraits, to be featured in The Record, which (get this) is the Penn yearbook. We had no idea Penn even had a yearbook, but it does and apparently has since 1865. The question of whether or not to be in The Record is very similar to the "do I send my picture in for Penn Facebook?" debate of pre-Freshman summer. And just like that summer, we're going to go with no, probably not.

A Pick-Up Truck With A Pick-Up Line

(10/15/09 12:24am)

Looks like there might be some people in Philly who love Speed Dating even more than we do! We spotted this truck on Walnut tonight, and totally would have hopped in to chat with a potential soul mate for 30 seconds, but it turns out those people in the window aren't real. Also it turns out that the speed dating does not in fact take place in the vehicle. Rip off! We did, however, find out that this service has several events coming up, most of which have great tag lines and even better descriptions. Check them out (courtesy of speeddatephiladelphia.com), plus a little commentary of our own, after the jump. Lost and Not Found: There are some good things about being single but the one thing that a lot of singles have in common is being kinda lonely. This is for people who been looking and been waiting to be found by that unique person to fill the missing spot in their heart. (Being kinda lonely is definitely bad. But having a missing spot in your heart? Well that sounds even worse. If you been experiencing that, we'd suggest a trip to the doctor) Asian Speed Dating: Asian come out for a nice casual evening and meet new people. We have a big community in the city of Asian people with a beautiful culture so come out and have a good time. (Is this directed at one specific Asian? And also, where exactly is the city of Asian people?) I m "Ready" for Love (The description for this one isn't funny, but the tagline sure is! This event promises to be full of people pretending to be ready for love.) NEW YEAR Fresh Start: Everyone who is looking for a Fresh Start in your love life and wants to start their New Year with a new someone come out. Bring the new year with a new beginning. (There is an astounding number of subjects in that description! Don't forget to BYO New Year)

A Lot Of Screaming Freshmen And Some Naked Ones Too

(10/13/09 2:06pm)

Over the weekend we swung by the Palestra for "The Line," hoping to get a first-hand look at a glorious and well-attended Penn tradition. Instead, it was really creepy and empty! Despite a brief chat with Coach Glen Miller about his trip to Smokes and Blarney that night, and an extended discussion with a security guard about Gameboys and Green Day, we did not have fun. We were feeling so sad about it that we had to stop by the Quad last night for the Econ Scream, just to make sure that school spirit hadn't died. Once again we were surprised, but this time it was pleasantly! The turnout was massive, there was a banner, a DJ played an assortment of boy band favorites, the screaming was loud, and, as final proof that the tradition is still alive, a whole bunch of boys and girls streaked through the crowd wearing giraffe masks. Check out some naked people who will probably do pretty poorly on the econ midterm after the jump. . (Oh hey look up on that bench! It's all of those candidates we helped get elected out of the goodness of our own hearts!)

Not All That Glitters Is Gitter's

(10/07/09 6:20pm)

While her take on Legally Blonde really got us talking, MJ wasn't the only freshman who made a campaign video this year. In fact, they're all over the place. The approach makes a lot of sense, considering that we would never vote for someone until we had a good feel for his or her ability to rewrite and perform (or recruit friends to perform) a popular song from two plus years ago. Can you even fathom the repercussions of electing someone who does not possess a mastery of the name-rhyme-centric chorus? We shudder to think.

Here's A Way To Carr-pe Diem

(10/06/09 6:12pm)

As bloggers (and Tweeters!) and people who hope to one day be employed, we will most definitely be checking out a talk about "New Media's Impact on Non-Political Journalism" tonight, given by New York Times columnist David Carr. You should too, because new media is exciting, there will be free food, and most importantly, this guy is really awesome! We'll let the press release prove it: David Carr writes a column for the Monday Business section of The New York Times which focuses on media issues including print, digital, film, radio and television. He also writes for the Media Decoder blog, a showcase for The Times’s extensive media coverage and a window on how the business of connecting with consumers is changing in the digital age. During awards season he writes a daily blog called The Carpetbagger about the Oscars. In addition, he appears in weekly videos that put a New York spin on the red carpet season. The event will take place at 7 p.m. in the Terrace Room of Claudia Cohen Hall. If you're not convinced that this is worth your time, read some of his writing! We're partial to "Me and My Girls"

It's The Perfect Video

(10/05/09 4:01pm)

The last time we got atchyou with election coverage, print was still all the rage. But look out, Kasia "Fierce," because MJ Gitter just tore down your trillions of posters in one fell swoop. Don't get us wrong, MJ has posters too. Oh GOD does she have posters. But more importantly, she has a video. If you haven't seen it, that's weird. Watch it toute de suite!

Pink Is The New Blonde, Brown, Black, Red

(10/05/09 2:00pm)

Today, as part of Breast Cancer Awareness month, the Penn Women's Center will once again host Pink My Hair, a fundraiser for the Rena Rowan Breast Center. To participate, all you need to do is pledge online or in person at the Women's Center or on the walk. You'll have the option of a hair extension ($15), a temporary dyed streak ($15), or even complete color at Saturn Club ($100).

ACLU Wishes You A Very Happy Banned Books Week

(10/02/09 3:02pm)

If you've been to the Perelman Quad around lunchtime any day this week, you may have noticed the sound of Winnie the Pooh being read aloud. Chances are, you let it go without a second thought. It's not like it's so bizarre to hear the faint mumblings of A.A. Milne every now and again, right guys? Well this time, there is actually an explanation.

Tippers Stay Tipping

(10/01/09 11:52pm)

Today must have been a really weird day on campus, because we got a steady stream of very bizarre photos (thanks guys!) and it's not even pledging season! Unfortunately, just this one time, we don't have all the answers to the "Please tell us what is going on here UTB!" cries that accompanied the tips. If you know what's up, help us out by commenting.

Whartonites To Display Signs Of Compassion

(10/01/09 3:28pm)

We'll be the first to admit that we're sometimes a little hard on Wharton. And we'll probably be around the...oh 23rd or 24th to admit that some of the claims we have made or supported are not 100% deserved, 100% of the time. The suggestion that business students are severely lacking in the "soul" department, for example, has us feeling a little bad today. But that's just because Wharton Women (in conjunction with a ton of Penn student groups) is bringing together these three things:

You Dropped Them Under-Where?

(09/30/09 7:19pm)

Listen, we understand that OCR is stressful and that getting a job is hard, and so we're usually totally understanding of the fact that you do what you have to do to secure future employment. However, we just stumbled upon this pair of underwear in front of Huntsman, and considering that interviews start today, the whole thing feels a little suspicious. We have some words of wisdom to impart, as well as a close-up of the garment, after the jump. We're not going to say anything but this: Don't sleep with a recruiter, but if you find yourself in a situation where oops, you did, make sure that you don't forget to pull your unmentionables all the way up afterwards. Because if you do, they might fall down on Locust Walk and you might have to just keep walking and hope that no one notices. They will.
