Hey boys and goyls, we're back with a new semester of What's HapPENNing! Did you miss seeing Liza screaming into her olde-timey cheerleader megaphone every Monday? Her name is Liza, by the way. Well, guess what? We're doing things a little differently around here– yeah! Instead of only focusing on events on Penn's campus, we'll be scouring Philly for the best stuff happening in the city of Nutterly Love. Ladies, leave your men at home because What's HapPENNing put on its big-girl boots:
Live Arts Festival and Philly Fringe Who: Live Arts and Philly Fringe When and where: now until September 22nd; varies Why: Theater isn't probably mostly lame, we totally swear. After all, these people will be at the Philly Fringe Festival, and we can't booty-dance while see-sawing, so they passed our criterion for greatness. BRING YO' KIDS.
New Queer Jewish Writing: Dan Fishback and Ezra Berkley Nepon Who: Kelly Writers House ArtsEdge Residency Program When and where: Tuesday, 6 p.m.; Arts Cafe (Kelly Writers House) Why: This event is intellectual, Jewish and gay. "What could be more Penn?" quipped a friend.
The Excelano Project Presents: Anis Mojgani Who: Excelano Project When and where: Thursday, 8-10:15; Platt Performing Arts House Why: Mojgani is the two-time Champion of the National Poetry Slam, which, how do you even win that? Does someone measure how loud people snap for you? Anyway. "How good is he, really?" you screech. Well, there's a Facebook group called "The First Time I heard Anis Mojgani," and 35 people like it. BOOM! Evidence to the face. Tickets are $10.
Red Bull Flugtag Who: Red Bull When and where: Saturday, starting at 11; Camden Waterfront Why: Flugtag, the national holiday of Singapore, is the day on which the community joins together as human sacrifices board self-constructed flying machines and crash them into the water. People "frikkin love it," according to a reliable internet source. And it's free!
Schuylkill Banks Fall BBQ Who: Friends of the Schuylkill Banks When and where: Saturday, 5-8 p.m.; Schuylkill Banks north of the Walnut Street Bridge (30th St.) Why: Philly evenings are all kinds of beautiful this time of year and the best way to celebrate them is to get drunk and eat, so we're setting up camp at the Schuylkill Banks Fall BBQ. Food trucks Dapper Dog and Pitruco Pizza will be there along with Victory Brewing Company, Penns Wood Winery, Pure Sweets and Little Baby's Ice Cream. Tickets are $35 (!), but so worth it.
Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti Who: Ariel Pink, presented by R5 Productions When and where: Saturday, 8 p.m.; Union Transfer (10th and Spring Garden) Why: Pitchfork darling Ariel Pink will be doing his freaky-deaky-gothy-glammy thang on Saturday, and we couldn't be more excited. One time he made out with his audience members. We're bringing our Lip Smackers®. See you there! Tickets are $16.
Bon Iver at the Mann Center Who: Bon Iver When and where: Sunday, 7:30 p.m.; Mann Center (52nd and Parkside) Why: Bonny Bear, everyone. If you stay awake through his set, that is. Tickets range from $30 to $50.
