Bad Week For Penn In The Media

cerebus

Well done, Penn alums: you're certainly making us proud this week. From Steven Wynn's ridiculous wedding to Raj Rajaratnam's ongoing trial, check out why some of our famous names should maybe say they went to Penn State.

Donald Trump Is, Well, Happening

In case finals have you trapped in a cultural vacuum, presidential-hopeful Donald Trump has been causing a scene demanding proof that Barack Obama was actually born in the United States. We know, that got old ages ago, but then again, so did The Apprentice. Last night at the White House Correspondents' Dinner, Obama and last spring's SPEC speaker Seth Meyers teamed up to fire back.

The theme of both bits was that Trump running for president was, as Meyers put it, "a joke." They echoed the sentiments of pretty much everyone that's been talking about Trump this week on both sides of the aisle. If it's any consolation for the school, Trump never acknowledges having attended the larger University of Pennsylvania; according to him, he's purely a Wharton alum.

Also called out at dinner: Jon Huntsman Jr. Watch videos here.

Steven Wynn's Wedding Was A Source of Secondhand Embarrassment

What do the weddings of Prince William and Steven Wynn (of Wynn Commons) have in common (no pun intended)? Both cost over $10 million, both featured previously-obscure British brides, and both occurred amidst massive media coverage... on the same weekend. Only a Penn alum would be ballsy enough to host a star-studded Las Vegas affair during the royal wedding.

As if the event's general douchiness wasn't enough, there's also this video of a wedding pregame where Wynn dressed like Elvis and his fiancée dressed like... well, look for yourself.

Oh, and Trump was at the wedding.

Raj Rajaratnam Is Still A Crook

Finally, someone engaging in good old-fashionned crime that isn't into the attention-whoring bullshit. The media circus surrounding this Penn alum's insider trading trial is just standard sensationalizing of white-collar crime. Last week closed with the fifth day of jury deliberations producing no verdict, but people are pretty much sure he's going to be convicted and sentenced to something.

If you want the nitty-gritty, Business Insider has a really good analysis of what's going on-- and not going on-- here.
