Testing The Waters

The National Institutes of Environmental Health Sciences has just awarded $7.85 million to a consortium headed by Penn and the University of Texas to determine the massive gulf oil spill's effects on seafood safety.

Of course, no study would be complete without a token Minkus. Luckily, Trevor Penning, the director of Penn's Center of Excellence in Environmental Toxicology (CEET) had this to say about the consortium: “We had an immediate concern about the safety of seafood since potentially carcinogenic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons from the oil could bioaccumulate in shellfish and enter the food chain.”

Translation: We're making sure the toxins leaked don't make Houston sushi taste any funkier.
