Food Trucks At Penn: A Tasting Menu

paula-sugar-philly

Listen up, freshmen goblins and ghouls: Penn's dining halls aren't that great. Yeah! See, at first, we were all, "Wow! Commons is serving chicken tetrazzini on a chocolate waffle today, isn't that nice?" But then we tried it and were like, "Wow! It absolutely tastes like Paula Deen just farted in my mouth." Luckily, though, we live in a city where we have plenty of options when it comes to grub, and Penn's cheap and delicious food trucks are winners in our book. So bid au revoir to Bon Appétit and check out ten of our favorite trucks:

Bui's What's that? For better or for worse, Bui's is THE Penn food truck. Located on 38th and Spruce, this cart scores instant points for its low prices, quick service and simple but filling eggy sandwiches which are known for working miracles on even the worst hangovers. Pro tip: "Salpeppakeshup?" means, "Would you like me to put salt, pepper and ketchup on your sandwich?" Don't miss: Hangover Special

Chez Yasmine What's that? No, Chez Yasmine (37th and Spruce) is not the title of a bargain bin romance novel! This truck offers up international fare from Vietnam to Sweden in a style that can only be called "Drunk U.N. Potluck." But everything's delicious, and your order comes with a bottle of water and fruit. Nice! Don't miss: Vegetarian bánh mì

Gigi's and Big R What's that? This outpost of Caribbean soul food on 38th and Spruce was named the best food truck in Philly last summer. Need we say more? Don't miss: Jerk chicken

Hemo's What's that? Next to Bui's, Hemo's (37th and Spruce) seems to be the most loved food truck on campus. You'll have to brave long lines for these cheap sandwiches, but the food is greater than the sum of its simple parts thanks to Hemo's secret sauce. Don't believe us? You will. Don't miss: Chicken cheesesteak

HubBub Coffee What's that? Think of HubBub (38th and Spruce) as a Starbucks on wheels, if Starbucks served reasonably priced coffee that didn't taste like hot, frouffy trash. Although the hours are unpredictable (check out the Facebook page for updates) and the coffee is painfully hot, HubBub and its owner, Drew (who has a loyal fangirl base at Penn), are hard to beat. Don't miss:  Just stick with the regular coffee and an almond croissant, trust us

KoJa What's that? It's no secret that we're cuckoo for KoJa (38th and Sansom), but can you really blame us? Huge portions of delicious (and cheap!) Korean and Japanese food, served up by a friendly (we think they're married?) couple. Hands down, the best food truck at Penn. Call in your order to avoid the 15 minute-long-plus lines during prime hours. Don't miss: Tofu stir-fry, extra spicy

Le Anh/The Real Le Anh What's that? What's the deal with these two? We're not entirely sure, but we have it on good authority that Le Anh owned a food truck, sold it to her friend, and then opened another truck across the street on 37th and Spruce: the Real Le Anh. The truth is pretty tame, right? In any case, both trucks serve pretty much the same generic, greasy "Chinese" food. It's a good thing. Don't miss: Vegetable lo mein

Magic Carpet What's that? Thankfully, Magic Carpet has two locations on campus (34th and Walnut as well as 36th and Spruce), because the all-vegetarian Mediterranean/Middle Eastern food here is flat-out delicious. The lines are long, but the wait is well worth it. Why aren't you there now? Don't miss: Seitan grinder

Tyson Bees What's that? Alright, we don't "get" the "concept" of how bees mesh with Mexi-Korean food, but we're willing to put our confusion aside because the grub here (33rd and Spruce) is unique, fresh and healthy. Prices are a bit higher than other food trucks, but if you're willing to shell out an extra dollar or two, you'll get a full, satisfying meal. Don't miss: Tofu and kimchi burger

Sugar Philly What's that? A pâtisserie on wheels at 38th and Walnut, Sugar Philly  does one thing only: dessert! The crème brûlée is perfection, but it's the macarons that have us coming back again and again. A definite winner. Don't miss: Macaron du jour
