The Penn Hate Crime Club has rebranded itself as the Anti-Crime Club after questions were raised during the club’s recruitment process this semester.

Officers of the club including president Barry Smith made the decision after noticing an influx of members who clashed with the club’s mission. “We’ve always been Penn’s premier club for those who passionately oppose crime but somehow that message seems to have been twisted,” Smith said. Some new members were decidedly not opposed to crime and were even in favor of certain types of crime though Smith declined to specify.

The club is now in disarray with a large portion of new members feeling confused about what the club stands for. “I thought I’d found a place where I belonged at Penn but I guess not,” Keith Stevens said. It’s unclear where disaffected members will go, though some like Whiting have at least found like-minded communities online in forums like 4chan and Librex.

“It’s honestly all quite disappointing. The rebranding really hit our plans to launch Hate Crime Clubs at other colleges,” treasurer Liz Bundy said. The branded white hats the club ordered will also have to be returned.

Smith expressed regret for making any member of the Penn community feel unsafe through his club’s errors noting that safety is the primary goal of the Anti-Crime Club.
