Jealous of Mamdani's Virality, Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker Searches for New Ways to Misspell "Eagles"
Zohran Mamdani, a 34-year-old state lawmaker, won New York City’s contentious mayoral race on Tuesday. His victory came with the help of a highly-publicized grassroots campaign, spearheaded by supporters from across the country who showed their adoration via social media.
But Mamdani’s internet stardom hasn’t sat well with everyone.
“It’s just ridiculous that people think mayor Parker isn’t getting all the love,” said Philadelphia mayor Cherelle Parker’s chief of staff, Sylvie Terk. “Sure, Mamdani’s young and hot, but frankly, so is Cherelle. That girl rocks a bold red lip.”
Parker herself experienced internet fame in January when she fumbled the Eagles chant ahead of a playoff game, spelling out E-L-G-S-E-S in front of a camera-heavy crowd.
“I swear to god I remember exactly where I was when she said that,” said Penn student Kyle Gregoric. “I mean, I’m pretty sure I was asleep for the actual press conference, but when I saw it on reels later I was like, ‘I’m dying!’”
While the blunder was embarrassing for Parker, Terk thinks that in today's media environment, it might just be a golden ticket.
"There's a phrase in the industry I'm sure you're familiar with: no news is good news," she said. "Wait, no, not that one. I meant no press is bad press."
Given the popularity of January's clip, Terk has tasked PR representative Michelle Armina with crafting a new misspelling of the chant, one that she hopes will bring Parker back into the spotlight.
“We were playing around with some combinations, and we realized we can add in pretty much any letter– even the weird ones, like Q, V, X, J– as long as we start off with an E”, said Armina.
A press release from the Mayor’s office on Tuesday announced a public appearance at city hall ahead of Sunday's game.
"Sunday's announcement is set to be the most important in Parker's term," it read. "Please be sure to have your phones recording."
