"I Have A Drink" Tips for Throwing a Great MLK Darty

Every year, as we near the day we celebrate one of our nation’s greatest Civil Rights figures, we all come across the same problem: How do I throw a great MLK day darty? While it may seem daunting, here are some tips to help separate yourself from the competition:

1. Begin the party with a showing of the 3.5 hour documentary King: A Filmed Record.

The first mistake that people make when throwing their MLK darty is lack of historical context. Let me tell you what you don’t want: A bunch of people looking to get drunk on the birthday of one of this country's heroes. Here’s what you do want: A bunch of educated people looking to get drunk on the birthday of one of this country’s greatest heroes. 

2. Mix Dark and Light Liquors.

I think we’ve all heard the warning of mixing dark and light liquors. On a regular day, it’d probably be smart to listen, but not today racist!

3. Throw ideologically opposed Malcolm X rager after party. 

While a darty is the perfect way to honor MLK (it’s calm, peaceful, friendly), eventually, the vibe is going to change, and the teachings of Dr. King aren’t going to cut it. Frat brother starting to shove you? Like Malcolm X said, “I don’t even call it violence when it’s self defense; I call it intelligence."
